Marlay 1 Lose Final / Marlay 2 6th at Start of Season Blitz
On a sun soaked day in ALSAA, Marlay Softball Club fielded two teams in the Softball Ireland Start of Season Blitz on Saturday April 18, 2009. Both teams acquitted themselves brilliantly with the more experienced Marlay 1 losing out in the final to a strong Munster Squad. The blitz was a round robin day with Marlay 1 finishing ranked 2nd with 4 wins and 1 loss and Marlay 2 finishing ranked 6th with 2 wins and 2 losses after the round robin stage. With a ranking of 6th Marlay 2 played the Dublin Bay Packers in the 5/6 playoff eventually losing by a couple of runs to finish overall 6th in the 9 team tournament and very respectful finish considering the number of newbie players with Division 2 rivals Blazzers occupying the places below. Marlay 1 played 4th ranked Suspects in a very tight semi final. After scoring nothing themselves in the top of the first inning a combination of walk a couple of errors and some good hits saw Marlay 1 concede 5 runs, this could have been much worse as top of the Suspects order left 3 runners stranded. After a scoreless second inning, Marlay 1 found their bats again with 5 runs in top of 3 again shutting out Suspects to leave the game at 5-5. With time running out the 4th inning was going to be the last and Marlay 1 once again hit to score a further 4 runs to leave the score 9-5 going into the bottom of the 4th and last inning. 3 quick outs saw Marlay win the game 9-4 and move onto the final against Munster. The final was a very one sided affair with a tired Marlay 1 coming up against a very strong and powerful Munster Squad. Marlay 1 couldn’t live with the power with Munster eventually winning out quite easily. A great day was had by all and good night also… The club now moves onto the first league games on April 20, 21 and 22.
