The rain clouds parted last Wednesday night in Marlay park as God's favourite team on God's favourite softball club played their final home game of the season and managed to secure 2nd position in Divsion one with a fine win over a resilient Dublin Bay Packers side.
Fresh off the back of a tough loss the previous week at Kiely's Kegs, the SO7, under the guest captaincy of Clay Dempsey set out to complete the double over the packers and secure a play off spot with a game to spare. Clay restored Rick Kelley to 3rd base for the first time since injuring himself in Week 2's win at the Flyers and it was like he'd never gone away as himself and Andy Haydu put the left side of the infield on lock down for most of the game, combining for 12 of the total 21 outs between them.
Offensively, the team managed to hit base hit after base hit but unfortunately, left almost two runners on base per inning, which is definitely something that will have to improve if the team is going to win their playoff. But the mere amount of hits, eventually wore on the packers and before long, a 14-2 lead was opened and the SO7 knew they would only have to keep up their solid defense for a couple more innings and the job was done.
To their credit, the Packers continued to fight and managed to claw their way right back into it, scoring two runs in the 6th and then capitalising on some sloppy defense in the 7th to cut the lead to 14-6 but finally the Shutouts managed to get that 21st out and it was off to the Eden for some food and celebratory Rock Shandy's!
