Opening Day of the season and we got off to a good start picking up an away win against our heavily fancied local rivals, the Dublin Bay Packers.
We had a lot of new faces in the line-up who weren’t around last year, with Carol Kelly, Darren Hanlon, Kim & Rick Kelley and Kelly Glander all new to the squad and aiming to help the team improve from last season’s play-off defeat to the Sluggers. The plan for the season was to score early and often and it couldn’t have worked better with Rick Kelley announcing his arrival on the scene, hitting the first of his two 3-run Home Runs in the first inning. Throughout the entire game, we managed to keep the scoreboard ticking along, managing to bring in 16 runs and only failing to plate a run in the 6th, which co-incidentally was also the inning where the packers sniffed the opportunity of an upset and managed to have their most successful offensive inning scoring 4 runs on a series of extra base hits. Defensively we looked pretty strong, barring that 6th inning, managing to make a lot of great plays to keep some well hit line drives off the grass to keep their better hitters from doing anything that could change the game. Some of our better plays on the night were Bernie's diving grab in the 3rd and Rick's tag play later in the inning at 3rd base. Congrats to Rick on his fantastic debut performance with two Home Runs and a total of 6 RBI's and to Kelly representing the girls going 3-4 with a couple of runs batted in.
