The Marlay Meteors turned out in force for the club's first cup game of 2011 at home to the Mariners on Tue 3rd May, thanks to heavy support from the Mustangs and the Mavericks. However the opposition failed to show resulting in a walkover for the Meteors and a pick up game between the 25 attending club members.
Meanwhile in St Anne's Park, Marlay Mayhem got an insight to Premier Division softball with a first round game against current Brian Walshe Cup holders Batpak. The home team put runs on the board in the first through a combination of hits, walks and errors. Mayhem kept in touch for 3 innings thanks to some good hitting, but Batpak pulled ahead to win 33-9 under the mercy rule after 5 innings.
The Mavericks had to wait until Wed 4th for their season opener at home to Premier Division newcomers Kiely's Kegs. The first inning saw the Kegs come out with their bats to take an early lead. In a tight game, characterised by some opening day errors by the Mavericks, the lead exchanged hands several times. The Mavericks managed to emerge from a bases loaded jam in the top of the 7th just one run down to set up a dramatic finish. Conor (P) led off with a double and advanced to 3rd on a throwing error, Austin (C) followed up with a three base hit. The Kegs chose to give intential walks to Adrian (2B) and Mel (1B) to load the bases and bring Colum to the plate. The Mavericks' former captain came through in the clutch with a walk off RBI single to bring an end to relatively successful opening week for the club. |
