Ireland 6th at 2009 World Series
The Irish softball team including Marlay's Colum Lavery finished a respectable sixth at the 2009 World Series after losing the 5/6 playoff to Munster. The last Irish team to play at the World Series finished a disappointing 13th and the current squad travelled with the hope of improving on this. Ireland finished day 1 with a 3 & 2 record which was enough to progress them to the Cup tournament in second place. Ireland were drawn against England (the eventual winners) and Africa in the Cup round robin with the knowledge that 1 win could be enough to put them into the semi-final. Unfortunately Ireland were comfortably beaten by England in the first game and in a nail biting second game against Africa, the Africans scored 3 runs in the bottom of 6 and held Ireland scoreless at the top of 7 to win 6-3. These 2 defeats meant Ireland would now play in the 5/6 placing game and after a an equally diasppointing round robin for them, last years beaten finalists Munster were the oppisition. In a pretty one sided game, Munster did all the hitting as Ireland's powerful offense which had served them well all through the tournament never got going leaving Munster to be comfortable winners. Team Ireland were disappointed with their final placing but as a group were happy that team performance was good over the weekend. Marlay's Sinead Harding also attended the tournament playing with the Craicers who finished in the top 12 of the 18 team tournament. Further Information: Colum Lavery, Marlay Softball Club email:
