I am already the proud holder of a Dublin Teacher's Table Tennis (ping pong to you) Division Three winner's medal from sometime back in the early years of the last century (I recall that the Somme offensive was progressing nicely for the German Army as I lined out in the final). However nothing can compare to the honour bestowed upon me by my former teammates of the Marlay Martyrs. |

Growing up in Ballinteer, Marlay Park has been a stomping ground of mine since childhood. Whether it was running in the egg and spoon race on school sports day, trying out for the St. Johns GAA club or stealing a kiss from a girl in the Bamboo Forest there was always adventure and fond memories associated with the park. The memories and adventures began to multiply when in 1992 Brian Reid, Austin Purton and I discovered the Marlay Martyrs. |

Softball in Ireland is small time stuff and the bragging rights for league or cup wins may seem petty to the newcomer or the outsider. While most of the population have never seen or heard of the game, those who have and who have played know that it is no small achievement to take a league title, no matter what division. |
